Before you go: five things to do

  1. Pick target species first, then dates, using the run timing guide.
  2. Buy your license and any king salmon stamp online before you travel.
  3. Verify your operator's registration and permits, and get the cancellation policy in writing. See how to choose a charter.
  4. Pack real rain gear and warm layers using our packing list.
  5. Check ADF&G emergency orders a day or two before you fish.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to fish the Kenai River?

For most anglers, mid to late July is the classic window because the large late run of sockeye salmon peaks then. June is good for early-run sockeye at the Russian River, and August into September is best for silver salmon. King salmon fishing depends on ADF&G regulations, which have included closures in recent years.

Does KenaiFishCharters.com run or book fishing trips?

No. KenaiFishCharters.com is an independent informational guide. We do not operate charters, sell trips or take bookings. Our goal is to help you plan and ask the right questions when you choose an operator.

Do I need a fishing license to fish on a charter?

Yes. Nonresidents 16 and older and residents 18 and older generally need an Alaska sport fishing license even when fishing with a guide, plus a king salmon stamp to fish for kings. Most charters expect you to buy your own license before the trip.

Can visitors go dipnetting on the Kenai River?

No. The Kenai and Kasilof personal-use dipnet fisheries are open only to Alaska residents with a household permit. Visitors can fish for the same sockeye salmon with rod and reel under sport fishing rules.

Where is the best place for halibut fishing on the Kenai Peninsula?

Homer is the best-known halibut port, with a large harbor on Kachemak Bay. Deep Creek, Ninilchik and Anchor Point offer shorter runs to central Cook Inlet grounds, often with boats launched from the beach by tractor. Seward and Whittier are other options reachable by road.

Is Kenai River king salmon fishing open this year?

It depends on the season. Kenai River kings have faced catch-and-release rules, gear restrictions and full closures in recent years, often announced by emergency order close to or during the season. Check the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's emergency orders before planning a king trip.
